Wildflowers: Toad Abodes and Wormy Wonders

We truly felt the Fall weather setting in, so we began our day gathered around the fire, where the girls learned about fire safety and the three elements a fire needs: oxygen, heat, and fuel.

To warm up, we played a game of squirrels collecting acorns for winter, and explored the park, where we stumbled upon a fairy door! We knocked, but it seemed like the fairies were out for the day.

Our highlight was meeting a special visitor: Tiger the toad! We spent time learning about toads—what they look like, what they eat, and how they survive winter. Inspired by Tiger, we built a "Toad Abode" in our yard. Do the girls remember what toads need in their homes?

  1. Cool, shady spots to keep their skin moist

  2. Underground hideaways for burrowing and hibernation

  3. Near water to stay hydrated

  4. Safe from predators with small gaps for hiding

  5. Bugs and food like beetles and ants nearby

  6. Moist, damp areas to keep their skin healthy

After creating the perfect toad abode, the girls went on a worm hunt! They measured the wiggly worms (as best as they could) and recorded their findings in their journals.

It was a wonderful day filled with curiosity and discovery!
