Wildflowers: November 6th

Today’s Wildflowers adventure was filled with joyful discoveries, playful creations, and meaningful connections with nature. We began the morning with a delightful surprise – our Earthkeeper brought some snails along to meet me. They were lively little explorers, much like us, and kept us entertained with their slow, determined travels.

With a spark of creativity, we crafted "explorer crowns," and of course Lucy wasn’t left out!

Our crowns ended up staying behind so they wouldn’t get lost in the wind, and we headed out to explore. We created a small collecting basket from a maple leaf to carry any treasures we found along the way. The Earthkeeper was thrilled to find some acorns, a symbol of fall’s arrival, and eagerly added them to her basket.

On our return journey, we reunited with our enormous leaf pile! With a little help from my husband and a neighbor (many thanks!), the pile from last week had turned into a huge mound of autumn color. The Earthkeeper dove right in, creating pathways and tunnels – it was the perfect playground!

After lunch, we ventured down toward The Flats. Along the way, the Earthkeeper had an idea to lower a log tied to a rope over the side of the dyke, hoping to spot it once we were at the bottom. She carefully lowered it, watching to see how far it would go. It didn’t quite reach the ground, so we’ll have to try something different next time.

We explored a new spot along the river today. The soft, spongy moss made for a wonderful sensory experience.

Just as we were marveling at the green carpet beneath us, the Earthkeeper spotted something magical – her first heron! We sat and watched for a long time. Not only did we see her walking slowly, but our patience meant we got to see her dive in, give her feathers a shake, and look straight at us (maybe not her most flattering angle!)

After a quick detour for some rock hopping and tree climbing, we wrapped up our day back at Heron Tree Estates. As a final touch to our adventure, the Earthkeeper wrote a letter and sent a beautiful picture to the Fairy Queen, who we imagine lives within the park, to share a bit of today’s magic with her.

Each Wildflowers day brings new adventures and opportunities to connect more deeply with the natural world, and today was no exception. We can’t wait for the next chapter in our journey!
