Sprouts: October 31st

We kicked off our day with a game that helped us discover what we have in common. Someone would say something they liked and if you liked it too, you’d raise your hand. It turns out our group has a shared love for gems, nature, and spaghetti, although I was the only one who likes rollerblading (but to be fair, the others haven’t tried it yet!).

Under a cozy tarp over the hammock, the boys took turns reading books about fossils and rocks, settling into a peaceful start to our morning.

As we began learning about leaves, a little yellow spider decided to join our lesson and kept coming back no matter where we moved her. We said goodbye to our new spider friend before heading out to collect leaves, and along the way, we stumbled upon the fairy doors! Our park is truly magical, filled with little surprises everywhere.

Back at Earthkeeper’s Cabin, the boys expressed themselves in their journals. One Earthkeeper crafted a story about how he envisioned the day, filled with “only nice things like taking turns and being a friend to nature.” The other Earthkeeper used his leaf collection to create rubbings and leaf confetti.

After hearing that one of the boys has a “nature name” at his other school, they decided they’d like to do that here as well. Since I formerly worked at the school Woodpecker attends, it was fun to start being “Heron” again! Our other Earthkeeper chose to be called “Wishstone”. Wishstone’s are rocks with a line that goes all the way around them, and he always finds a ton of them!

Our trip to The Flats obviously still included rock hunting, but they also brought along supplies to build a fort. Woodpecker showed incredible determination as he found creative solutions for hammering stakes into the ground. Despite a few setbacks, he finally had the fort just as he wanted and even gave it a water-resistance test with a spray bottle. Meanwhile, Wishstone gathered long branches for his own shelter, while I opted to make a miniature shelter myself.

To end the day, Wishstone introduced us to a new game he’d created, complete with detailed drawings to explain the rules. It was the perfect way to wrap up our time together, with laughter and imagination fueling our fun.

As we move into November, we’re excited to keep getting to know the Land and see how it shifts with the changing seasons!
