Sprouts: October 17th
Our curious Earthkeepers are still fascinated by worms, and this week, they took their exploration to the next level. Armed with tools, they dug into the soil, recording the length and weight of their finds, learning more about these important creatures.
One of the Earthkeepers shared a fun idea called "worm grunting," a technique used to attract worms by rubbing a notched stick against the ground. I made these tools for them by whittling sticks together—an exciting skill they look forward to learning soon!
Will the worms be charmed out of hiding?
No worms, but beautiful percussion 😂
Mother Nature continues to gift us with raspberries. The boys kindly taught their peer how to tell if a berry is ripe, and experimented with eating berries at different stages of ripeness.
Turns out, unripe berries aren’t quite as tasty!
We also built a worm hotel! By layering sand, soil, leaves, and compost, we're hoping to observe the worms burrow and create tunnels right through the side of the container. It’s an ongoing experiment, and we’ll be keeping a close eye on any changes.
A visit to The Flats gave the Earthkeepers time to hunt for rocks and fossils, climb trees, and even build forts.
A self-proclaimed paleontologist showing off his rock museum.
The only skeleton I want to find in the woods!
We could probably spend all day in this beautiful spot, and as always, they were reluctant to leave when the day ended!
