Sprouts: November 28th
Today’s Earthkeeper enjoyed some one on one time by the fire, with delicious results!
A letter from Finny reminded us the importance of showing respect for fire.
After this helpful reminder, we began to build the fire. We talked about what materials we need, including ones found in nature, and ones that are man-made. Natural tinder includes cedar bark, cattails, and dry grass. On a wet day, cotton balls and Vaseline might help a spark catch!
We built a dry nest for our “dragon egg” (homemade firestarter 😉) and soon had a beautiful fire going.
We had a day of cooking planned, first on the menu: apple sauce. Our Earthkeeper worked hard from start to finish, and our snack was delicious!
By the time we finished our apple sauce, it was lunch time! Making this food was an excellent way to slow down and appreciate what goes in to making our food. We marveled at how cooking over fire makes us feel connected to the Land.
Our Earthkeepers family had generously sent sausages and bread for lunch, and we thoroughly enjoyed them. The dogs were also grateful for the pieces they were offered!
After making sure the fire was completely out, we ventured into the world. Crossing the Blackfriar’s Bridge led us to a new space, with a “castle” that inspired the Earthkeeper to build a tiny fort for fairies.
On our way back to Heron Tree Estates we stopped to make friends with a tree and try our very first Sit Spot. A camera helped keep focus during our few minutes of silent awareness, and we were able to capture what we noticed on our "“polaroid’s” back at the Clubhouse.
With the day coming to a close, we started a new book: St. Nicholas and the Valley Beyond: a Christmas Legend. This enchanting story explores the true spirit of gift-giving and our relationship with the environment as Nicholas attempts to solve a riddle and restore magic to the valley he loved as a child. Fifty breathtaking full-colour paintings (that took 10 years to complete!) add to the beauty of this tale.
We’ll have to find out what happens next time!
Thanks for a great day Earthkeeper!
