Sprouts: November 14th
Today was our first rainy day at forest school, but that doesn’t get Earthkeepers down! It turns out our presence in nature has not gone unnoticed, and we received mail from a magical neighbour…
The Earthkeepers were excited to write back to Finny right away, but first we got to work tending the land where we spend our days. With some cooperation, teamwork, and communication, we had our jobs done in no time!
We checked in on our pumpkins and found that curiously, one had collapsed and gone mushy, one looked almost the same, and neither of them had bugs on them. I wonder why? What will we find next week…
During snack time we started a new book: The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton. The stories take place in an enchanted wood in which a gigantic magical tree grows. The tree is so tall that its topmost branches reach into the clouds and it is wide enough to contain small houses carved into its trunk. The wood and the tree are discovered by three children who move into a house nearby. They befriend many of the residents and have adventures in magical lands that visit the top of the tree. At the beginning of the story the children have to walk 5 miles to their new house! This led to an impromptu math moment where we worked out how many kilometers they walked. It also sparked an idea for us to track how many kilometers we walk during the day.
With that in mind, we ventured out into the rain to explore! We kept our garbage pickers handy and managed to fill two garbage bags with litter. It’s sad to see, but all the Earthkeepers felt good knowing that they’re doing their part to help Mother Earth.
Our 2.3 kilometer adventure in the rain included discovering a new spot for rockhounding, “rattling” conversation with a Belted Kingfisher, and a staring contest with a Heron. There is always fun to be had along the river!
Towards the end of the day we dried off and relaxed by writing letters to Finny, rating how beautiful different types of rocks are, and reading. We reflected on our day together (every Earthkeeper said they loved the whole day, no changes required!) and gave Sarah the Maple Tree a hug before heading home. Thanks for a great day Earthkeepers!
